We recently learned through social media about a racist incident on Salinas High School grounds on Friday, August 20th. Several Salinas High School students used a black baby doll to depict racist stereotypes of African Americans. These images are beyond disturbing. They were made public on social media.

As business leaders and as Rotarians, we feel compelled to speak against racism. We do not tolerate speech or behavior that promotes bias, discrimination, prejudice, or hatred because of age, ethnicity, race, color, disabilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

We request an open and thorough investigation of this incident so that everyone involved is held accountable and faces appropriate consequences. Our kids have suffered lasting trauma and we must all be a part of the solution. Education is key to eradicate racism and it must be available for everyone in our community. We need to come together as a community on an ongoing basis – educators, parents, administrators, city leaders, civic leaders, community leaders – to address the systemic racism in our community.

Rotary International’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement:

At Rotary, we have no tolerance for racism. Promoting respect, celebrating diversity, demanding ethical
leadership, and working tirelessly to advance peace are central tenets of our work.

We have more work to do to create more just, open and welcoming communities for all people.

We know there are no easy fixes and that challenging conversations and work lie before all of us. Rotary’s
strength has long been our ability and commitment to bringing people together.
We will tap into that strength now as we stand with those who are working for peace and justice.

Rotary will do our part to listen, learn and take action to ensure that we continue to contribute
to making positive change.
